At present 55 percent of the first and second class government jobs are recruited in the priority quota. The remaining 45 percent are recruited in merit quota. There are various types of quota in the third and fourth class jobs. Students and job-seekers have long been demanding a five-point demand for reforming the existing quota in government jobs. On Apr 8, the police beat up the activists of Shahbagh in Dhaka and threw tear gas shells, and the situation became hot. This movement spread to different universities of the country. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina announced the cancellation of quota on 11th April.
The protesters then postponed the movement until the quota cancellation notification. After the meeting with Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak, the protesters gave time till May 7. The protesters declared human chain in the country's educational institutions on Wednesday and they will go on strike again on Sunday after the announcement was not completed even after that time.
